YUNUEN NAVA
When I was 7, I knew I wanted to become a fashion designer. Thatās so Raven was the culprit behind this madness and I wanted to be like her. I began to sketch and create clothes for my barbies with random pieces of fabric I would find around my house. I did not know how to sew at the time, so everything was bound by tape.
When I was 13, I knew I wanted to go to UC Berkeley. We were assigned to pick a college of our choice for an Avid research project and I randomly picked that school. I ran with it and I fell in love. I somehow knew that was where I was going to end up. I did not know at the time what I wanted to get out of it or what I wanted to major in, but I knew I was going to have to work hard to make it happen. Senior year came, and I got in! I had yet to even develop my skills on a sewing machine and it wasnāt until my second semester of college that I bought one and actually created something I could wear and not just a plastic doll. I think I was scared of failing and the fear of not being great discouraged me from starting sooner. I decided college was going to be the time for me to step up and get to work in order to achieve my aspirations and I'd like to think that I did that. I graduated with a degree in Media studies and Communications, a minor in history and 5 fashion shows under my belt, all with the help of my friends and family.
I am now 22, and as I continue my journey, I want to share my experience. I continue to learn, take every day as an opportunity to improve and figure out who I am as a designer, and strive to change the industry to be an inclusive place for all minorities and walks of life. Our journeys are all different from one another, but we all have something to learn from each other. As a Latina woman, I am proud of who I am and where I come from and hope to be a resource for many, because there is definitely room for all of us!
